Ciao! Anyone have an idea for Italian Alps around Christmas? We'll be in Venice for New Years, and wanted to go someplace nearby for some Winter Wonderland and Christmas Markets. Castelrotto, Bolzano, and Merano look interesting, but seems like many hotels are closed at this time of year. Belluno and the Ponte nelle Alpi looks closer to Venice, but can't find anything there? Grazie!
Hi Mark, Check out Brixen/Bressanone and Sterzing/Vipiteno. Both are close to the Dolomites (Val Gardena) and both have charming old towns. We especially like Brixen/Bressanone. Extremely charming and they have Cristmas Markets as does Sterzing/Vipiteno. Never been to the Christmas Markets at either place, but they're on our list. We have been to both during trips in October and April though. www.brixen.org www.sterzing.com/de/ferienorte/sterzing.html We can recommend staying in the area at the Garni Ariston in St. Christina, Val Gardena. It offers a breakfast buffet that's included in the price, but no dinners. Ortisei, 5 minutes away, has larger hotels and a good selection of restaurants. www.garniariston.com www.val-gardena.com Paul
