Venice Airport (VCE) to Venice

I tried looking in this forums, but was not able to find my answer. Should I take a bus or taxi from VCE to Venezia Mestre Station? Do buses run regularly?

Then I guess we take the train from Venezia Mestre Station to Venezia Santa Lucia Station.

We are hoping that our flights do not get delayed, but in the event they get delayed, would it be better to buy the tickets right there, or in advance?

Thanks

Where in Venice are you going? The train way you describe is not standard, but valid. It would take a fair amount of time. Easier is the No 5 bus to Piazzle Roma which is near the Santa Lucia station although across the Grand Canal. But you get the vaporettos there to else where in Venice, and you board before the stop at Santa Lucia and it really gets crowded.

The other way is the Alilaguna scheduled boat from the airport dock to various stops in Venice. Lastly the expensive water taxi which can take you right to your hotel, or at least very close.

The Alilaguna is the best bet from Marco Polo airport to Venice proper. You walk to the boat dock from the terminal, a short walk, then sail to where you need to be in Venice. Ask your hotel or B&B what the closest stop is. Buy your ticket on arrival.

We don't have a specific place yet, we are just on the planning stages and planning on going the Airbnb route

We are just trying to figure out the best way to get from airport to Venice island. See this Google maps

Oh, good to know we can get directly to Venice island from the airport, will have to look more into that

Here is a website which spells out the options in good detail.

My favorite way is the bus and vaporetto. The bus picks you up at the airport door and drops 100 feet from the vaporetto dock. There is just nothing like the ride down the Grand Canal on the No 1 boat. Plus I usually get a multi-day transport pass and you can add the airport bus cost on at a discount.

Next favorite is a water taxi, but only if someone else is buying. But it is a 1/3 of a mile to the dock, although I hear they have a moving walkway now.

Least favorite is the Alilaguna. The boats are low in the water, the windows are salt caked, and if your stop is at the end of the run, you're on the boat for more than an hour. And the walk to the airport dock (better now?)

Venice is small. You can get to any part of it from the airport. How you travel depends on where you are staying and how much luggage you have. Once you know, come back and we'll give you the best route. Take into account that transportation is very slow in Venice. It often takes 1.5-2 hours to get from the airport.

Hello! We just visited Venice last month.

We flew into the Marco Polo airport, and then we took the ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma. The ATVO ticket desk was easy to spot when we were in the baggage claim area at the airport. We walked up, told the guy we needed two tickets to Piazzale Roma, paid him, and he pointed us in the direction to go find the bus outside. There was no need to buy these tickets in advance. The whole ticket-buying process in person took less than 5 minutes.

Here is the ATVO schedule. You're sure to find a ride since it runs every 20 minutes!
http://www.atvo.it/allegati/aeroporti/linea_35_dal_26.03.2017_al_28.10.2017.pdf

The bus ride took about 15 minutes to Piazzale Roma. Once the bus dropped us off, we had less than a 5-minute walk to our hotel.

Because our hotel (Palazzo Odoni) was so close to Piazzale Roma, the ATVO bus made perfect sense. I think it was the most convenient option given where we were going. If we were going to a hotel farther away from Piazzale Roma, we probably would have used a form of water transportation.

By the way, to answer your original question, a bus/taxi (any automobile) would not be driving to the Santa Lucia station. It would be driving to Piazzale Roma. Piazzale Roma is right next to the train station, but cars can't actually drive up to the station. Piazzale Roma is a parking lot/bus turnaround area, and it's the farthest that cars can drive into Venice. It's like the bus dropoff place. :-)

Lauren H: Glad to hear the ATVO bus worked well. I went ahead and bought our tickets yesterday, even if that wasn't strictly necessary. It's one piece of paper and we can go straight to the bus.

From there we'll collect our vaporetto passes and take #1 to Rialto Mercato, which is virtually on our hotel's doorstep. Sam's response here, and in earlier comments, convinced me the bus/vaporetto combination was the best option. His description of riding the Alilaguna boats was the capper for my decision.

I think the OP's original question was about bus/taxi to Mestre station and taking a train in. If you were staying near Santa Lucia station, there is nothing wrong with that. Saves the walk over the Ponte della Constituzione or a 7.50 EUR vaporetto ride.

Sam, oops, you're right! I re-read the OP and now see that I misinterpreted the question. I haven't had my second cup of coffee yet. :-)

Hi there. Maybe I wasn't clear on my original post. I only mentioned "Venezia Mestre Station" and "Venezia Santa Lucia Station" because that's what I saw in Google Maps in my research on figuring out how to get from the airport to Venice island (I keep calling it like this because I don't know how else to refer to it, ha), and because I thought the only way to get to Venice was by train.

Also I keep reading "Piazzale Roma" when I look it up in Google Maps I'm taken to this, is this the place you guys a referring to? If not where exactly is it? I'm a visual person and I feel like I need to see it in Google Maps to get a hold of the location.

Reading some of the responses here, I think we will do the bus/vaporetto combination :)

As far as our accommodations there, we are not staying in a hotel, but rather we are booking thru Airbnb.

There are 3 ways to get from the airport to your hotel or apt. in Venice itself. The 1st is a water taxi and it is the most expensive. Probably 125 Euros for the boat. But if you can join up with another couple or two it might be worth the cost. Another possibility is a shared water taxi that will cost a little less depending on the number of people in your party. Only you can decide.

The 2nd and next least expensive is the Alilaguna boat. It will cost about 20 Euros per person. It takes longer, you do have to "check" you baggage so you don't have control of it the entire time, and you probably will not be able to get a "non stop" line to the area of your hotel or apt.

The 3rd and least expensive is a combination bus and vaporetto (vap.). It takes a bit longer, but that is what we do because we travel very light with just one carry on apiece. There are two bus lines that serve the airport. One is ATVO and is NOT affiliated with the vap. system. The other is ACTV and IS affiliated with the vap. system. At the airport you can get a vap. pass for various periods from 24 to 72 (or more?) hours. You can have a one way or two way bus fare added to the vap. pass. There is a good site maintained by the ACTV system that has current prices and etc.. Don't remember the url so just Google it.

If you decide on option # 3, take the # 5 ACTC bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma. Be sure and validate the vap. pass on the bus. Do not wait until you get on the vap. Also, validate the pass each time you use the vap. Then take to the vap. to the stop closest to your hotel or apt. The # 1 vap. is the slow boat as it stops at every stop and the # 2 is faster as it only stops at selected stops. We've done option # 3 many times. Easy Peasy and cheap to boot.

There is a site called veniceforvisitors.com that has a lot of good info. that you might want to check out .

Once you know exactly where you will be staying, we can give you more detailed information.

The link you provided is not a link to Piazzale Roma people are referring to.

OP, the last google maps link you posted (post 10) is not P. Roma that you want. To find it open up google maps and find Venice Santa Lucia station. Zoom in until you can see the store names. From the station go southwest (towards 7 o'clock). Go past the Sephora, past Nike, over the canal and P. Roma is basically right there. Sorry not sure how to post a link to google maps.

Hilarious. You have to google "Piazzale Roma, Venezia". That way, google won't show you the Piazzale Roma in Istrana, which is about 20 miles north of Venice, near Treviso.
"Garbage in, garbage out", as the computer geeks used to say.

@TC Great detailed explanation. Will do more research in the third option you described

@Rocket Thank you. I found it :)
