Venice Airport-transportation options?

We have a flight leaving the Venice Airport (Marco Polo VCE)at 6:35am to Amsterdam then to the US-what is the best way to get to the airport-at a reasonable price. Also, how early should we leave our hotel-our hotel is located near Campo Santa Maria Formosa.

I found the Alilaguna boats rather slow. I prefer to take the vaporetto to Piazzale Roma and then the airport shuttle bus to the airport. It's cheaper and faster. However, since you are leaving so early, you need to talk to your hotelier for the best way to get to the airport. He/She will have the best advice.

Taking the Alilaguna Blu from San Marco gets you out of bed earlier than if you can get walk to Fondamente Nove, neither of which are particularly far from Santa Maria Formosa (you're lucky to be at Santa Maria Formosa, one of my favourite parts of Venice).

The only Alilaguna Blu (the other Alilaguna lines start later) boat which would work is the first one. It leaves San Marco at 03:40 making 4 stops as it goes counterclockwise all around the east end of Venice via the Lido before it calls at Fte Nove at 04:21, calls further at Murano before getting to the airport at 04:59 with plenty of time before the plane.

Or, as said above, night boat to P Roma and bus.

Another option would be to move over to the Airport area for your last night. There are a number of decent priced hotels with shuttle buses that are sure to get you to the airport at the right time.

Angie, you are not in the best area for such an early morning trip to the airport. At Campo Santa Maria Formosa, you are not really close to a vaporetto stop. For the early Alilaguna boat, you are about equidistant between the San Marco stop (in front of the San Marco Piazza on the Grand Canal side and the Fondemente Nova stop on the Veneitian Lagoon side (Murano side). The earliest Blu Line Alilaguna boat begins its run at the San Marco stop at 3:40. It stops at the Fondemente Nova stop at 4:21. It gets to the airport about 5:00am. Please contact your hotel as ask them what you are up against in walking to either of these vaporetto stops at 3:00am in the morning. I'm sure it's safe but you don't know where you are going in the dark. It looks to be about a 1/3 mile to either vaporetto stop.

Your other three choices are to 1) walk to the San Marco stop and catch the night vaporetto at about 3:40am. Take the N vaporetto to the Piazzale Roma. At the Piazzale Roma, take the ACTV No 5 bus at 4:40am or the ATVO bus at 5:00am to the airport. 2) Stay your last night at either the Courtyard by Marriot or the Titian Inn next to the airport. They have early shuttles. 3) Arrange with your hotel to have a water taxi waiting for you at the hotel at about 4:30am. Cost is about 90E-110E for the ride.

I don't know what your budget is, but the last time I had to depart from Venice, I just kept it simple and took the expensive water taxi. We were two women traveling alone, and it was worth it to us to spend our last night actually IN Venice, and there was no way we were dragging suitcases in the dark to a Vaporetto stop. Keep it Simple. It is now @ 100eu. That's a lot, but it's Venice.

I agree with Donna. If you can afford it, I would splurge on a private water taxi especially given the time of day that you need to leave your hotel. If your hotel has a water taxi landing, it will be even easier! While a private water taxi is expensive, it is the fastest way to get to the airport at that hour of the morning. Have a great trip!
