Venice Airport to Venice

We are flying into Venice, but were inquiring about how to get from Venice airport to our Venice Hotel. I was reading about a water taxi? Also, is there a dress code for Venice? I was reading about covering shoulders and knees. We are doing a Rick Steves tour, but didn't know if that was necessary for the things we are doing on the tour.

Welcome to the Forum. You can use the Search feature at the top of the page to gather up a lot of posts about options from the airport to your hotel, so I won't repeat that. Regarding a dress code, it's mostly a tourist town, sadly, and you will see every conceivable sartorial choice, so wear what you like. (Comfortable, non-slip shoes for all the bridges are helpful.) There are some fun YouTube videos where you can "take a walk" in various cities, so you might like to try that to see what people are wearing.

Important exception: There is actually a requirement to cover knees and shoulders in some of the churches. I had to buy a tissue-like wrap when I wore a sleeveless shirt into one.

If you are on a Rick Steves tour, one month prior to the tour, you will receive detailed instructions on how to get to your hotel from the airport as well as the costs.

As for covering shoulders and knees, it’s the respectful thing to do in churches. Some churches have guards at the door that enforce it but many smaller churches do not enforce the dress code.

If you know the name of your hotel, its website should tell you how to reach it. A water taxi will always be the most expensive option: a private motor launch that takes you to the closest dock to your hotel. Expect costs starting around €120. Less expensive is the shared Alilaguna water bus, which will stop at the various public docks. Least expensive is a land taxi or bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma in Venice. From there you can take a vaporetto to the stop closest to your hotel; or walk if the hotel is close enough.

Dress code, as previously mentioned, is in reference to entering Catholic churches , not just in Venice, but anywhere in Italy. Shoulders and knees are to be covered- both men and women. It is a mark of respect, and is culturally expected. At the larger churches that are visited by large numbers of tourists, door guards do enforce this rule. At smaller churches, or those away from the tourist trails, that can't justify the cost of employing guards, it is left to the conscience of the individual visitor to observe the custom.

You ABSOLUTELY MUST have your shoulders and knees covered to enter San Marco and other churches which charge admission. Many smaller churches are unmanned and you probably could get by without doing so, but why risk it ?

To get to your hotel you can get there by water taxi as we did earlier this year. More expensive than other methods but not so much if there are a few of you. We were 4. Also a nice way to first approach the city.

search for venice, scroll down to transportation. depending how deep your pockets are, a private water taxi is $$$. we have used them 4 times with it being the best way to arrive. they will be at the dock waiting for you outside the airport. another option is shared shuttle from airport. they drop you off as close as possible to your hotel

check the different options listed. remember there will be others on the alilaguna with luggage also, along with others just riding. maybe no seats (standing all the way holding luggage with crowds) depending on your stress level to pay higher rate or lower rate. we just add it into our traveling budget and be relaxed for vacation. good luck
