as noted, this question comes up alot. my own opinion "best" is reserving a private water taxi (most expensive). where exactly is your hotel located in san marco? when is this trip, how many days/nights you're staying and how many people?

private water taxi is like a water limousine that can drop you off as close to hotel if on a canal.
alilaguna from airport, walk down ramp to water area to pick up boat. since first stop you should get a seat with luggage near you, many say sit on right side for the views getting to venice.
you can also take taxi or bus to piazzale roma (santa lucia train station) then take water taxi to hotel for a cheaper cost. many water taxis lined up when you arrive to that gorgeous view of grand canal.
since first time to venice & landing later, spend the money for a private water taxi, so so worth it. cut back on an expensive meal or tour. we have used the 4 times and loved it. you can get so lost and frustrated trying to find your place and hoping not to come to so many dead end "alleys" falling in.
we had a separate account "the go go account" and saved each payday to enjoy the ride in that "floating limousine". we have no regrets and would do it again in a heartbeat. hpoe all works out for you and the decisions you make. don't cut back on "cheap" when spending much on this fabulous adventure. any other tips/info you need about seeing and doing in venice, just ask.

You can take the #5 bus to P. Roma. Depending on the time of year, amount of daylight, and amount of luggage, you might want to take a regular land to P. Roma. From there take a vaporetto (water bus) to the stop nearest your hotel and walk from there. Least expensive, but if you are tired and jet lagged, you might find it a bit inconvenient.

The Alilaguna boat service will be more expensive, but perhaps a bit less hassle. They may or may not not stop near your hotel, possibly making for a longer walk than with a vaporetto.

A private or shared water taxi will by the most expensive, but you will arrive in style! If your hotel does not have a private dock on a canal, you will still have to walk a bit.

We booked a private transfer to our hotel. Used Viator it was the best. Although it was more expensive to arrive in the boat to the vaparetto stop closed to our hotel was great. Our captain gave us a history and geography lesson along the way. Easy after you get your luggage walk to the dock and board your vessel. Viator gave clear and easy instructions, I would definitely do it again.

Viator is a reseller-they don’t actually run any tours or water taxi rides-just resell them with an upcharge
