Venice- airport to hotel at Midnight

I will be arriving at the Venice airport on a Sunday night at Midnight. I will be alone and I will need to get to the Hotel Antigo Trovatore at Castle 4534. I’ve never been to Venice and don’t know how to get around. Is a taxi my best bet? Do taxis in Venice take credit cards or will I need euros? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Ask your hotel regarding water taxis. There are no roads or cars in old Venice.
It will be expensive, especially at that hour, 140+euros. Does your hotel have a dock, or do you still have a walk? Venice is very safe. If you still have a little walk, your hotel should give you directions, based on landmarks. Google maps gets a bit lost in Venice.
Use a credit card that has no foreign transaction fees. You may have to alert your bank that you are out of the country.
Enjoy!

However, a taxi with wheels will get you to Piazzale Roma where you can get the "N" boat to San Zaccaria and walk to the hotel. Should ba about half the cost of a water taxi, but a little slower. But as was said, make sure the hotel can check you inFrom there at that hour. From their website:

Will you arrive late? No problem! Just inform us before

There is a bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma, but the last one is at 1:10 am on a Sunday night. Will you have checked luggage?

There is an alilaguna ferry service that leaves Marco Polo at 00:20 (20 minutes after midnight) going to San Zacharia B stop. From there, it is a 250 metre walk to your hotel. The Alilaguna takes about an hour from Marco Polo to San Zach.

Buy a paper map of Venice before you leave home.

The Alilaguna route probably takes less time than land bus to Piazale Roma, and then vaporetto (water bus) to San Zach, and is certainly less complicated.

I don’t think catching alilaguna 20 min after scheduled arrival is even possible
It takes time to deplane, passport control, luggage ( if checked) and walk a good 10 min or more to the dock from Arrivals hall

I would consider staying at airport hotel on arrival night
It will be much easier to get to your hotel in the morning

Landing at midnight and making a 0:20 am boat at the Alilaguna dock will be a bit challenging. If the plane lands on time and makes it to the gate by midnight, and you are the first one off the plane with no luggage, and can run the quarter mile to the dock, more power to you. Yes, there is a moving walkway on the upper level, with an escalator up and an escalator down. Hope they are all working.

There are buses in front of the terminal at 0:40 and 1:10 am. There is an "N" boat at 1:50 am, that will get you to San Zaccaria at 2:27 am. Its going to be a long night. Cost for the bus plus boat is 18 EUR.

PS, assuming a midnight flight is arriving from elsewhere in Schengen. The last flight today is an Iberia flight from Madrid scheduled to arrive at 23:55. No passport control for that one.

Thank you, everyone, for your helpful advice. I think Christine H. is right- I should stay at a hotel near the airport and make my way to my Venice hotel in the morning when it is light out and I am rested.

I actually forgot that we did arrive late in Venice once, and stayed at the Marriott Courtyard at the airport. I completely forgot about it until Christine's post. The hotel is not walkable, but is a five minute taxi ride. Because of the hour, the taxis charge a little more, maybe 20 euros total. The hotel had a shuttle, but it didn't run all nite.
In the morning, the bus #5 is right outside the hotel. We bought bus tickets from the hotel. The bus goes to Piazza Roma. From there, buy a vaporetto pass.
Enjoy this magical city.

Pat- thank you for the hotel recommendation. I am feeling much more comfortable with my plan now.

We have stayed at the Marriott Courtyard, and it was nice but expensive (unless using points). Our friend stayed at Best Western, which is just a couple minute walk from the Marriott. It was nice and convent for the bus. Just another option.
