Venice Airport

We have an early morning flight from Venice and had read in Rick's Italy 2013 book that getting an early morning water taxi is not a problem. I have also read on this help line that staying near the airport is a better option. Any advice or suggestions.??

Alilaguna boats take over 1 hr from San Marco to Marco Polo. Water taxis may shave off a few minutes, however they cost money (Euro 120 approx.). Staying at the airport has the advantage that you don't need to get up as early and it's cheaper to get to the airport by regular taxis (the ones with 4 wheels). The disadvantage is that you are not in Venice that evening, you are in Tessera (Italians in fact call the Venice airport Venezia-Tessera) surrounded by farmland.

There is a Marriott Courtyard Venice right outside the airport property, and their free courtesy car will take you to the airport as early as 5:00 a.m. They're priced very well, too. See Marriott.com From the Venice Piazzale Roma you can take ATVO (provincial company) buses and by ACTV (city company) buses (route 5 aerobus) to get out there. You could ride a bus to the airport and catch Courtyard's courtesy car back to the hotel.

You didn't say how early your flight was nor where you are staying. Buses to the airport depart from the Piazzale Roma at 4:40am (ATVO) and at 5:00am (ACTV). Trip takes 25 minutes. The difficulty here is getting to the Piazzale Roma in time when the regular vaporettos don't begin service until 5:00am. For travel this early, you can take the night vaporetto but you are catching this boat at about 3:40am. One option is to stay at the Hotel Papadopoli which is about 800 feet from the buses just off the Piazzale Roma. You can walk to the buses. Note that water taxi fares are about 90E-110E for up to 8 people.
