Our flight leaving out from Venice is at 8:15 am. What is the best way to arrive at the airport early, and/or do we need to stay at a hotel by the airport the night before?
I would check with your hotel for recommendations. Generally the water taxi work but they can be expensive. The bus is more reasonable. Since that is a local flight if you got there between 6 and 6.30 would be more than adequate.

Where does that flight land? It matters, and dictates what, if any, exit processing you need to go through. And thus how early you need to be at the airport.
That is the issue with Venice, and why it's generally recommended to fly into Venice and out of somewhere else. But whatever, I'm sure you will have a glorious time and will enjoy Venice.
We don't know where your lodging is, and how close you are to the Alilaguna stop. I'm not sure when they run early in the morning. I know there are shared water taxis from the airport, but I don't know if there are shared water taxis TO the airport. Your lodging is probably your best source of info.
That being said, I think I'd check into an airport hotel the night before. There is a Marriott Courtyard five minutes from the airport, with a shuttle. ( It's not walkable) The #5 bus from Piazzale Roma stops right outside this hotel.
Perhaps leave your luggage at the previous hotel, have a nice last dinner in Venice, then move to the airport hotel at bedtime?
Good luck and enjoy your trip.
We were just in Venice a week ago. We left by train, but our son’s family flew out of Venice. Their flight left at 6 am! But I booked them a hotel on a little canal near Piazzale Roma and they left by taxi (land taxi, not water taxi, booked by the hotel the night before) at 3:30 am. It worked fine and they were able to enjoy their last night in Venice instead of in an airport hotel.
Lola, might you share the name of the hotel you booked your son into? We are flying out of Venice on Oct. 16 on an 11am flight -- not so early as your son's, but as we have not been to Venice before, we are only just learning about transport options. Maybe that hotel would be a good option for us!
The hotel was Arlecchino, and we stayed there as well.

It is a 3-star hotel, nice but not fancy. Our “small double room with canal view” was indeed small, but it had everything we needed for one night, including a nice modern bathroom with a great rain shower. The two windows did indeed look out into the canal below.
But it looks like you need a room on Oct. 15 and they do not have anything available that night. You could try their “sister hotel” next door, Hotel Olimpia. Our breakfast was there—-nice buffet but it was busy. The Olimpia is a bit more “Venetian” in decor (translation: ornate), and a bit more expensive, but they do have rooms available on the 15th.
With an 11 am flight, you could take an airport bus from Piazzale Roma, or a taxi from the taxi stand there (cheaper than having your hotel call one). There are two buses, the ACTV and the ATVO. This blog explains them, and hopefully someone here can give you more guidance, as we have not used them.
Lola, thank you so much! I will check out these options....
If anyone is interested, we did not want to leave Venice in the middle of the night, which would have been necessary to make a connection to San Francisco. We instead flew to Munich in the afternoon, and stopped over for a couple of days. Bonus = Oktoberfest! Then home on a non-stop.
When we leave Venice we fly to LHR (London) before heading back to the US.
When we leave Venice we fly to LHR (London)
That is a Schengen exiting flight so you need to do the the passport exit processing procedure, so you should give yourselves more than just the 2 hrs of a 'domestic' flight situation.
It is not 'a local flight'
Thank you all for the information! Since it’s not a local flight (we are flying out of Venice to LHR how early is recommended to arrive at airport?
I’d want to be there by 5:30 -6:00
See if you can find out what time the airlines check in desk opens.
Depending on where your lodging is
Water taxi or bus or land taxi
Alilaguna might be an option
Not sure what time they start running

We had a very early flight out of Venice. It was expensive but took a water taxi to the airport & seeing the city quiet by boat was a highlight of our trip.
Carrie~ did you book your water taxi ahead of time? And where did you book it?
If you stay near Piazzale Roma your hotel can book an early morning taxi (regular taxi, on land) for you. This is what we do and our son’s family did.
Land taxi to the airport, pre-booked, is just about 50 €. Water taxi is more than double that, unless you use the “shared” system which can take considerably longer, as they stop to pick up other passengers.
