Venice airport check-in

If we have a 6:50 am plane departure from the Marco Polo Airport in Venice, how early should we arrive at the airport? We plan to stay at a hotel near the airport that offers shuttle service however the shuttle service may not begin until 5 am. Any suggestions for dealing with such an early departure? Thank you.

What’s your destination? We allowed ourselves about 2 1/2 hours this past June and it was a little tight. But we were on a transatlantic flight. If it’s domestic might be OK. It’s a busy little airport.

You will be fine getting to the airport an hour ahead. We took a taxi from the cruise terminal and it was maybe a 15 minute ride this last April. The Marco Polo Airport is its busiest mid mornings on cruise ship embarkation days.

Many Ita!Ian airports have those very early flights out. It is hard enough facing a 10 hour trip to North America without having to get up at 3:00 am to get to the airport and face a security line. The truth is most of those early flyers end up sitting in another larger European gateway airport until midday when their next flight leaves. I refuse to fly anywhere until 8:00-9:00 am.

At that early time your flight is certainly going to a European hub destination from where you will catch your transatlantic flight to North America. Flights from VCE directly to North America depart later in the morning.
For a European flight you need to be checked in with a boarding pass in your hands at least 45 min prior to departure.
I'm sure if you are standing in line at the check-in counter 75 min prior to departure, you will make it comfortably.

Flew out of VCE last week, a 06:30 flight. Arrived at airport and was in line for check-in at 04:45. I was through all the airport rigmarole, and was airside enjoying my last caffe and cornetto, at 05:30. YMMV.

Thank you. I re-checked my flight and see that it will go from Venice to Germany before the States so from what you have said it looks like we should be okay!

I would add to that: make sure you are through passport control before your boarding time. I don't know if this is true for all international flights out of Marco Polo but I flew American Airlines 2 weeks ago -- was taking my time with breakfast and last minute shopping -- and didn't realize I hadn't gone through passport control yet, Fortunately, it is a small airport, passport control was literally right next to my gate, and I breezed through with about 10 minutes to spare before the American Airlines started boarding.

I just flew out of VCE at the beginning of September. It was a 12:15 PM flight.
Bit of a bizarre system...you get there and then have to wait in the lobby area of the terminal to check your bags until your flight with a counter number is posted on a large schedule board. You then get in line to check your bags at that counter.
Next you get in line to go through security. My experience was that they split the security line in half and a large group of us were told to follow a woman holding up a "follow me" sign to another security line at the far end of the terminal. Got through security and then had to walk through the shopping area back to the far end of the airport where my gate was located.
From there I had to go through passport control and finally arrived at my gate. I was lucky that there was no line for passport control - about 30 minutes after I went through, the lines were very long.
Because some people had to wait quite a long time to check their bags back at the beginning of the process there were a few who were sprinting to catch their flights.
It all worked out fine for me but was a bit nerve wracking having to wait in all those lines with departure time getting closer and close! Seemed like a very overly complicated, inefficient system to me.

When I checked in on-line the day prior to my flight, my boarding pass indicated the check-in counter number. This was 3 years ago.
