I have a flight leaving 7:45 out of the airport my wife wants to go to a hotel by the airport I would like to know if it is possible to arrive 2 hours earlier if we stay in Venice and leave that morning. We are staying
by San Marco Square.
Stay in Venice. The Alilaguna shuttle boat leaves their San Marco stop at 03:40 and arrives at the airport docks around 05:00 It is about a 5-10 minute walk to the main terminal. Cost is 13 euro per person. www.alilaguna.it You want linea blu. The buses also start running from Piazzale Roma at 04:00 and arrive at the airport by 05:30 You would take the vaporetto to P. le Roma.
You have several options. 1) two different bus lines begin service to the airport at 5:00am. You'll be at the airport by 5:30. 2+hrs should be fine for getting through security. The problem is that the vaporettos don't start running until about 5:00am as well and you are 30 minutes away from the Piazzale Roma where the buses depart. There is a night vaporetto but you will need to catch just one possible boat at 04:02 at the Vallaresso stop near San Marco. This boat will arrive Piazzale Roma at 4:30. The second option is the Alilaguna (www.alilaguna.it). The Blu boat departs San Marco at 03:40 and arrives at the airport at 04:57. The next Blu boat arrives at 06:07. The third option is the water taxi. This is a fairly high-speed custom run from your hotel to the airport. Cost is 90E-110E for up to 6 people. Your hotel can arrange this. Possible extra cost for early departures from the hotel. I call this the James Bond ride. If you can splurge a bit, you won't forget it. The fourth option is to stay at the airport. The Courtyard by Marriott is within walking distance. There is also the Titian Inn hotel and residence that is very nearby.
Another vote for staying in Venice. Nothing's more romantic than a dreamy nighttime stroll through the city on your last night in Italy! The alilaguna is great-- it arrives at the airport at just the right time for those early morning flights. Of course San Marco is your closest stop, but if you're travelling light, consider walking 15 minutes to the Fondamenta Nove stop. It's the 2nd to last stop before the airport, and picks up almost 40 minutes later than San Marco, meaning 40 minutes less of riding around on the boat, and a few more minutes of shuteye before that early morning alarm goes off.
