We have a flight from Venice to Zurich at 10:00 am. How early should we get to the airport, how long does it take, and what is the best way to get there for a group of 12? Does anyone know of private transfers?
It’s a Schengen Area flight, the equivalent of a domestic flight, therefore if you are at the airport 75-90 min prior to departure you will have time to spare.
The time necessary to reach the airport is heavily dependent on where exactly you are in the historical center of Venice. The historical center of Venice is in the middle of the Venetian lagoon, while the airport is in the Italian mainland.
If you are located near Piazzale Roma (where buses and taxis can go) then it’s just a 20-30 min ride. If you are far from it, then you need to add the time for boat transportation (vaporetto) to Piazzale Roma, which could be easily another half hour.
You could also opt for a water taxi from where you are directly to the airport. It’s expensive (120€+ for the ride), but since water taxis hold up to 10 passengers a big group like yours can share the expense. You will need two water taxis (6 people each). It should work out to about 20€ per person. That could be the fastest way to the airport (about 30 min to the airport dock) if you are staying away from Piazzale Roma.

Depending on the nature/composition of your group, you may want to add a some extra time to Roberto's suggestions as a herd of 12 does not move as quickly as 2-4 people.
Thanks - we are staying at a hotel a couple of blocks from the train station.
I highly recommend these folks for transfers. We hired them for Venice airport to and from cruise ship and were very satisfied. They answer emails very quickly.
