Venice Airbnbs

I found two airbnbs in Venice, that I am having a hard time figuring out which one would be better, so any insight is helpful.

One is across the canal from the train station, but down a long narrow alley. I am not sure if this would be a problem at night? Since it’s close to the train station and a lot of tourists in the area, would this be a problem? This one has a nice courtyard, but in June is it too hot to relax outside? The owner of this one lives on another continent, but has agents in the area.

The other is about 20 meters down from the San Stae Vaparetto stop. Being so close to the stop, would this get noisy at any time during the day? This one is smaller with no outside area. The owner of this one is local and willing to help is needed. This one is more central to things in Venice.

There’s about a $400 price difference with the second one being the more expensive. Any thoughts or suggestions?

If you are going in June, the. bigger question that may need answering is do they both have air con. We were there in June and air con was a must (and thankfully, we had it). We were less than 10 minutes from the Arsenale stop and noise was not an issue. However, we were not in the middle of the action, but it was an easy enough walk or ride to all we wanted to see and do.

Sal, you make a very good point. They both have air con. Actually, they both even have a washer/dryer.

Both are in Santa Croce which has far fewer tourists than the other side of the Grand Canal.

I wouldn’t worry about the “long narrow alley” for the first one as that describes most of the streets in Venice. And I wouldn’t be concerned about noise at the other one; it’s not like a vaporetto stop is a party scene. We were at the San Stae vaporetto stop in mid -September this year, around 10 pm and there was no one else there.

It would help if you could provide links to both. I for one do not understand why one is so much more expensive. How many nights are you staying?

Lola, we’re staying for 5 nights. I booked the first one back in June and the other one just the other day. As it gets closer I am sure they get more expensive.

If it were me, I would take the first one you listed.
More cosy and home-y looking, and a garden in Venice is very rare!

I don’t think you can go wrong with either. The one closer to Ferrovia is better if you are arriving and/or departing by train. Certainly has lots of light which is wonderful. The terrace is a bonus, although evenings in Venice can be tricky with mosquitos-true in much of Italy though! I wouldn’t discount having the terrace just because of that. I would wonder how much use it would actually get. Closer to one of our favorite pasticceria though- Pasticceria Trevisan.
Nothing wrong with the San Stae property either.
Since you’ve booked the first one, stay with it and enjoy!

So much of Venice is long narrow alleys that a lot of accommodations are in one. The Airbnbs we've stayed in on two separate trips were that way. No problem, except that since street lighting is not consistent, you should have a good light handy. If not your phone flashlight, I like to keep a good light in my day bag. (Also useful when the light in a European stairwell turns off before you get to your door.) On our last Venice trip last month, our building's front door was not well lit and until I learned to find the keyhole by feel, I had to get a light out to find it.

I think Venice is quite safe. I walked alone through many dark Venice streets/alleys after dark (not hard in the winter) and I never felt that I was in real danger. (I am a male) There's a certain atmosphere that I really like in Venice at night when the streets empty out.

The other is about 20 meters down from the San Stae Vaparetto stop. Being so close to the stop, would this get noisy at any time during the day?

I think it depends on which 20 meters. If it is ground level on the same waterfront street, it might be noisy. If it is 20 meters around a corner and down a quiet narrow side street, it might not be noisy. But a lot of it will be about what else is going on there, like stores and bars. If there aren't any, the vaporettos coming and going are probably not going to be too noisy.

Personally I would take the older one with the garden.

Doogie, reading your OP, I thought the one you described near the train station sounded familiar. Looking at your links, it's the exact same one I have booked for late September! I was not concerned at all about the alley, and the reviews looked great. I heard from the owner the day after I booked and she sounds super well organized and professional.
