Venice advance tix for attractions question

Hello!!! Planning a May 2024 trip with a few days in Venice. We will be purchasing tickets in advance to the major attractions.
Any advice on the best way to do these? We will be four active adults, willing to get up early as possible to avoid crowds (I know it will be crowded no matter) and we want to see Doge’s Palace and St Marks.
Should we buy separate tours of each? A combo tour of both? Skip tours all together and just wander on our own? I read there are added attractions in St marks that cost a little more but are worth it so do we roll them into a package?
Finally, should we do one each morning or do both same day? I think we would be arriving early Saturday and leaving Monday afternoon (have read many things are closed Monday so we thought maybe a good day to travel on to Florence.)

Advice appreciated!!!

Hello Cissy K,

The St Marks Basilica tickets can be purchased here: https://basilicasanmarco.skiperformance.com/en/store#/en/buy

In my opinion you should buy the St. Mark's Basilica plus Museum and the Loggia of the Horses tickets. The extra purchase gives you access to more upper levels of the cathedral for different views, access to the interesting museum exhibits as well as access to roof to look out over the piazza and the Grand Canal.
The Pala d'Oro is probably only really interesting if you're altars and church decoration. You can buy the upgrade to these areas while inside the cathedral itself so you don't have to decide before hand but that's my vote.

St Mark's tickets are separate from all other offers and sites so you'll need to buy them on their own. There are many different Venice discount and museum cards but I don't think you'll be there long enough to take advantage of any of these so i would just buy tickets.

The Dodge's Palace ticket information is here: https://palazzoducale.visitmuve.it/en/pianifica-la-tua-visita/tickets/

In my opinion the Dodge's Palace is a visit that really gains from context and historical information so a tour of some kind may really help you to appreciate the history and machinations of old Venice. There is the Secret Itineraries tour that supplies some of this - a close look at the cells, administrative centers and torture chambers with Casanova's cell. I don't know what the options are for other tours but a good tour guide could really enrich the experience. The palace is amazing on its own and worth seeing but it means more if you understand the treacherous society it represented in old Venice.

You can do both in a long day - Dodge's Palace early and St Mark's in the afternoon, but it will be a long day. If you do this think about Rosso Pomodoro for lunch. It is a Milan fast food chain with a huge (for Venice) dining room near the square and American speed service which is important if you are looking to make an afternoon ticket time. Otherwise I would recommend getting take away.

I love Venice, have a great trip,

Glad to help. We did the Dodge's morning, St Marks in the afternoon last September because we hadn't been to Venice in many years. Let me know if you have any more questions.

We're lucky enough to be going back this year and I plan to visit no huge sites and enjoy the city. Be sure to spent some time wandering and getting lost in the city - Venice is a magical place.

Have a great trip,

Can I purchase entry to the museum and perhaps the Loggia of the Horses when I am in the Basilica? I have tickets to tour the Basilica already and heard that you can enter the museum for 5€ when exiting the Basilica and going up the stairs.. Does that include a view from the roof? But then not sure that includes the Loggia of the Horses.. Thanks!

There's one ticket covering the museum, the loggia and the viewing terrace--at least that was the case as of September, and I think it would take considerable work to reconfigure things to separate them. I bought that ticket inside the basilica without difficulty. That combo ticket is €7, I believe. I think the entry fees increased at some point last year, as did the cost of vaporetto tickets (now €9.50 each--big ouch) and passes.
