Venice is experiencing high water that is flooding 70% of the city. Here is a link to a picture of St. Mark's Square. http://gyazo.com/c69ffcbaa90571b8e1a890afe97a850c Here is a link to the full article. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/nov/11/venice-floods-high-water-italy
Again, the flooding only last a few hours. We are currently here in Venice for three months. The flooding was gone by yesterday afternoon. No flooding today.
Larry, I saw some footage of the Acqua alta on the news today. It looked worse than I've ever seen. Perhaps I should add "Hip Waders" to the packing list for my next visit there? Cheers!
Ken, I have my wife and daughter booked on a flight into Venice for next September.
Larry, Hopefully the flooding situation will be much improved by then. I've been there in September and haven't had any problems at that time of year (so far). As the first reply indicated, the Acqua alta seems to be somewhat "tide dependent" so only lasts a short time. Are you not going with them?
I don't think I'd want to be sitting in that water...ugg :(
Venice has a sewer system linked to the mainland, I've heard. Also, electrical installations are located high so as not to be affected by flooding. The buildings were built with a base layer of stone which is impervious to water. They are used to high water and are prepared for it.
The water is contaminated by sewage coming up from the drains. That's why disinfectant has to be used to wash places down after an aqua alta.
There is a very interesting picture in todays (11/12) Honolulu Advertiser newspaper of 4 people sitting around a table in chairs, in St. Marks Square, in swimming suits with water up to the top of the table. Picture says it was taken on Sunday (11/11)and said that the high water mark was the sixth highest in the last 150 years. Glad we were there the second week of this last September. Dry as a bone then.
