One of the many nice things about Venice is how compact it is. Don't feel you need to stay right near St. Mark's Square to be able to enjoy it. We've stayed twice at Pensione Guerrato (an RS favorite) and highly recommend it. It's near the Rialto. http://www.pensioneguerrato.it/

I liked the Casa Verardo, a couple of bridges away from the St Marks/San Zaccaria vaporetto stop, not too hard to find. Convenient to the RS recommended restaruants alla Basilica, Antica Sacrestia and sandwich row. Has some rooms with canal view, elevator, nice breakfast and a large patio for relaxing. Probably not cheap in the summer but seemed a good value to me.

in october we stayed at Hotel Riva: www.hotelriva.it it's a few 'blocks' north/inland of St Marks Square. I loved the location and we had a canal view. breakfast was a bit sparse but the gondoliers punting by the window was entertaining ;)
