Two hotels in that range are the Hotel Marin and the Hotel Santa Lucia. Both have websites. You can get a wider selection by looking at Tripadvisor.com and sorting by price.

Gil,
We're booked on a RS tour in October that will include Venice. The tour hotel is HOTEL ANTIGO TROVATORE (www.antigotrovatore.it) .

We were advised that the hotel is currently undergoing a remodel and that we should wait until "early spring" if we'd like to book additional nights as they are not taking any new reservation during the construction period.

Don't know exactly when "early spring" is, but the azaleas are beginning to bloom here in Mississippi so it can't be far off!! (Wonder if Venice is on Central Azalea Time?) Hope this helps.

Hi Gil,
We've stayed in the Albergo Marin two different times and liked it fine--it's not fancy but it's clean and comfortable. We also liked the fact that it's off the beaten path and near the train station and a vaporetto stop. Others might prefer to stay near St. Marks Square but this location worked well for us.

Check out www.venice-hotels.it for good pictures of lodging in Venice. We stayed in Hotel Bernardi (hotelbernardi.com) in the Cannaregio area and loved the hospitality. We were far enough away from the congestion around St. Mark's, but it was just a few minutes walk to literally everything.

Gil,

We stayed at the Hotel Arcadia in the Cannereggio section of Venice. Nice hotel, includes breakfast. Very clean, safe, nice area and wonderful staff.

Hotel Rossi might be a very good choice near train station BUT on a very quite side street with a garden next door . (info is from 2006 ) another really helpful tip to the right of train station (100 meters)look or ask for the Mensa . This is the employees caferteria with excellent tasty food (lunch and dinner )you will be spoiled once you eat here. Mentioned in a Rick Steves book which I am sure will give this much more credibility then my opinion of 25 years of visiting ...Mensas are at most Italian train stations always good value but Venice is tops for taste

Hotel Riva! http://www.hotelriva.it/index.html

We stayed here and since we were early, which I recommend doing, we were able to pick our room, right on the corner so we could see down both canals! Rooms are beautiful but a little small. But who cares, you're going there to not be in the hotel. Sal and his wife are very kind and accommodating!

Check out this website.www.cross-pollinate.com It is a bed and breakfast booking service for Venice, Florence and Rome. It is run by an American family living in Rome. I stayed at a very nice place in Venice called Ca'Riccio. You can find it on their website and it will be within your price range. It's in a great quiet local neighborhood within walking distance to everything. Happy travels!!!!

I've stayed at Hotel Bernardi twice. I opted for the "annex" which is around the corner & you get your own key. All the services are at the main building, but I love the marble staircase and Murano glass lighting, and the feeling of being in a private palazzo! Rooms are clean & baths luxurious for a very good price.

There is a very affordable and unique place to stay that is actually surprisingly less than your budget and about halfway between the rialto bridge and st marks. They have both private rooms and hostel bunk rooms. Some of the private rooms even have a little kitchen in them. My family stayed in a private room with 4 sets of bunkbeds, a room for 6 would otherwise be impossible to find. Plus all the rooms are on canals as the building has canals on two sides of it and there are amazing frescos and 15ft plus ceilings. It is run by a church and has cleaning times that you cannot use your room, and sparse furnishings but clean, cheap, safe and terrific location!!! you have to do fax tag with them for reservation but worth saving the money in such a pricey city! Here's their info:

Foresteria Valdese di Venezia
Centro Culturale - Palazzo Cavagnis - (guesthouse)

tel. 041-5286797 (9am-1pm, 6pm-8pm)
fax 041-2416238

hope this helps,
Kim

I wrote to the Hotel Marin and got a response from someone who said they "own" a travel agency there and he could find me an apartment for my family of four.

Does anyone know if this is legit?
