Venice accomodations

Any recommendations for a hotel or apt in Venice that is somewhat reasonable and close to San Marco and the water stops so we don't have to haul our luggage too far?

How are you arriving in Venice? San Marco is a bit of a haul from the train station if you're concerned about toting luggage.

Yes we are arriving in Venice, then taking a train to St. Lucia station. The I guess from there we take a water taxi to the area of our hotel? So looking for a hotel close to St. Lucia or San Marco depending on how far away it is.

It sounds as if you could benefit from a good guidebook for Italy, such as the Rick Steves book. Your questions imply that you don't have one. For example, one of the basic things about Venice is that there is a difference between a water taxi (very $$$) and a water bus ("vaporetto" and much more affordable). Getting the Rick Steves Italy book will be the best money you spend on your vacation. Also, if you specify "reasonable" in euros, you'll get better suggestions. For example, we really like Pensione Guerrato near one of the vaporetto stops, and we consider it reasonable but don't know that you would.

If you're OK with very simple (ie, 1 star), I liked Hotel Doni. It's on a small quiet side canal less than a 5-minute walk from San Marco. Folks were nice, and English was spoken. Breakfast was extremely simple (ie, rolls and coffee). If you take the No 1 vaporetto, you'll have 1 bridge to cross and about the equivalent of a city block to walk. When I took the vaporetto line that goes to to the train station via the Guidecca Canal (don't remember number; maybe 51/52) there were no bridges to cross.
