Hello,
I'm trying to plan our last day in Venice. We would like to tour Accademia and wander a bit in the Doroduro district before heading out to Burano and Torcello. If we get an early start, does this sound doable? We are staying in San Polo. Transportation details would be really helpful. Thanks!
You can't get into the museum until it opens, which will delay you.
It takes quite a bit of time to get out to the remote islands of Burano and Torcello, and then time there, and the time to return.
I think you are biting off quite a big chunk, trying to ists the museum, have a stroll around a sestiere, and enjoy the islands.
Do you then leave, or do you have the last night yet to come?
Could you stroll around Dorsoduro after you get back, maybe before dinner?
It would be best to go to the Fondamente Nove vaporetto stop (way over on the other side of Venice) to catch vaporetto #12 that goes to Burano & Torcello. http://actv.avmspa.it/en/content/water-bus-service-timetable-0 Another link with some useful stuff: http://livingveniceblog.com/venice-instructions/venice-vaporetto/vaporetto-map-routes-lines-stops/ Probably a good idea to get a day ticket for 20 euros instead of individual tickets. Your plan sounds a bit rushed. Perhaps get up and wander early, before the Accademia opens. If you are planning to rush & spend only an hour in the Accademia, then your plan is doable depending on how late the last vaporetto heads back, but I haven't checked the schedule...
I'll take Nigel's advice a step further: Go first to the islands and then visit the Accademia in the afternoon. Except for Mondays it is open until 19:15. You can leave for the islands around 9:00, have lunch out there, then come back and see the Accademia and finish with a nice stroll aroudn Dorsoduro before dinner.
Forgot to mention, Rick Steves' guide has all the transportation info, but the quickest way to/from the islands is to go to Fondamente Nova as mentioned above. It takes a long time to go by vaporetto from San Zaccaria. You can walk across Venice faster.
I am looking at my plan again, and may come up with something that works a bit better. We do have that night so that helps. We have been to Venice before, but not to the islands so I would really like to fit that in. On this trip, we have 3 nights, 2 1/2 days. Not a lot of time, but we have a busy traveling style. I do have the RS Italy and Venice books, but somehow seem to get lost in the transportation details when I am planning.
Thanks to all for your help!
