I love Venice - just walking around the island(s) and canals.
You can also take a boat to Murano and/or Burano - but that would take most of a day.
I would recommend that you get on the vaporetti on the main canal and just ride thru Venice,
enjoy the scenery.

Looks like you are going to have about 1 1/2 days to look around?
You could also book a tour (walking and gondola ride)
I used a consolidator Viators and had an evening walking tour of Venice with a wonderful young college student for a guide - it ended with a gondola ride (about 30 - 45 minutes) Note - there are many companies and private individuals for tours of the highlights of Venice

You might want to look in the Rick Steves Italy book or the Venice book and there are excellent recommendations of things to do, see, operating hours, costs etc.
Hope you have a lovely visit to Venice.

You should arrive in Venice more days in advance of your tour. There's no place like Venice. I hate to hear when people are arriving into Venice just 1 or 2 days before a cruise because Venice is much much more than just a cruise port!

Get on the vaparetto that goes up and down the Grand Canal at night...it's magical! Get off the main walkways and just wander the back streets - you really can't get lost ort go too far before you hit the lagoon and have to turn one way or the other. There are lots of signs pointing you back to the main landmarks of the city.

I recommend you get Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Ports. It will have LOTS of information on Venice as well as your other stops.

And for more information, look at Cruise Critic. Here's their Venice Port Review: http://tinyurl.com/cscz8z7

Here's their Italy Ports Forum: http://tinyurl.com/bwqtmhk

And here are their Roll Calls. You can arrange to join others on your sailing on a private tour, thus having the "best of both worlds" (cost of a group tour but more private experience): http://tinyurl.com/ap7h55m

I agree with Anita. The ride on the Grand Canal is wonderful. I listened to Rick's audio tour at the same time. It was like a private, guided tour. I also took a tour with Alessandro Schezzini (described in Italy) and loved it! I took the city tour with him and the "pub crawl". Those tours were one of the highlights of my stay in Venice.

I hope you will bring the afore-mentioned RS guidebook for Mediterranean Cruise Ports. You can also get a taste of Venice's offerings and links to the free audio tours at http://www.ricksteves.com/europe/italy/venice. But don't focus too much on seeing every church and museum. Aside from the top entry-sites of St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, the canal rides and wandering through markets and back streets are next on my priority list, too.
