does anyone know roughly how long it is to stroll from the cannaregio region to st marks square would prefer to walk if its not to far to take it all in

As far as I am concerned, no place in Venice is too far to walk as it is very small. There are lots of twists and turns and count on getting lost but I bet probably no longer than 25 minutes. Walk there, not in a rush so you can enjoy the ambience, and then if you are tired, take the vapporeto back. That's what we did alot and plan and doing again this fall.
