veloce travel bag or other

I'm trying to decide what carry on bag I want to use for a 30 day trip to Italy. I mainly want to use it for my camera(SLR plus telezoom lens), 7 inch Tab pad, small phone, glasses, travel guides, water bottle(s), and maybe some extra room for odds and ends. I'm resigned to checking in a rolling bag since my wife will be carrying the usual medications and toiletries.
I like the Veloce travel bag(from the pictures) but I'm afraid it's a little too big for carrying every day for sightseeing.

I want something along the size of a messenger bag, something light but with lots of compartments and room for at least one water bottle.
thanks

Check out this small camera holster: http://www.cambags.com/media/reviews/photos/original/f2/29/78/case-logic-medium-slr-camera-bag-slrc-202-80-1406652547.jpg
The side pouches are meant for extra lenses, but hold a half-liter water bottle just perfectly. In that inside slot with the manual poking out, I can just slip my iPad mini into there. It's amazing how many supplies I can stroll around with using just this little bag!

As far as a messenger bag to use as a big 'man-purse' on the plane. I'd likely prefer the 'Euro Flight' to the Veloce. But I recently had to shop for a baby shower at 'Baby's 'r Us' and was truly impressed with the selection of (diaper?) bags that were on offer that would work perfectly for your purpose.

If you are carrying a tablet consider carrying electronic guides via Kindle, or some other form. It will save a lot of weight.

I've been looking for the same thing....ebags told me this would accomodate an iPad and a DSLR.
