Venice - Late Night Arrival

British Air has canceled the flight we were booked on that got into Venice at a decent hour. The new flight gets in at about midnight. Any hints on how to get to our hotel at that time of day? Any other ideas?
Thanks

The most convenient, and likely most expensive, is a water taxi. About 100 euro from airport to your Venice hotel. You can reserve one by Googling them. I would recommend it to take all the hassle and worry out of your arrival.

Thanks, I was of course hoping to avoid that cost. Do the other larger public transports work late at night/early in the morning? (Our first trip to Italy.)

I would just find other flight arrangements. Venice is a maze of alleys, and finding hotels at 1:00 a.m. is just too difficult.

Check into the hotels on the Marco Polo Airport grounds for the night--if you take that late of a flight. Then go into the city the next morning.

Some Venice hotels have private water taxi landings. If you happen to have one of "those" hotels booked then there's no problem locating it.

Unless you are certain that the water taxi can take you directly to your hotel's dock, I would stay near the airport and go into Venice the next morning. I've been to Venice multiple times, but I wouldn't consider trying to find a new hotel in the dark, particularly at an hour where there aren't going to be many people out. In my experience, being able to ask for help can be really important in finding places in Venice.

When I've had a very late arrival in Venice, I've taken a bus to Padua and stay there overnight. There's a bus right outside the airport it will take you to Padua.

Also, make sure that the hotel has a 24 hour reception desk – many of them don't.

Or book a hotel in Mestre just for that one night and take a taxi there from the airport. You'll probably save a bit of money as Mestre hotels are cheaper. Normally I don't suggest staying there but in your case it makes sense---but just for the first night! Then move to your hotel in Venice.

Or call British Airways and ask for a different flight---but research first and figure out what you want.

Speak to your hotel and ask if they have a spot for the private taxi or the closest place to the hotel. Maybe the can have someone meet you.

Tell us the name of your hotel and we will be able to help you better.

The way I would do it is take a regular taxi to Piazzale Roma (40€), then walk to the hotel from there. If the hotel is far, you might have to take the night vaporetto or a water taxi from Piazzale Roma. However the water taxi from Piazzale Roma to anywhere in Venice is 80€ therefore if you have to take a water taxi, you might as well take it directly from the airport.

If you don't have a hotel yet, find one near the Piazzale Roma/Santa Lucia station that you can walk to.

At that time of night only the night time vaporetto line 1 works and it's very infrequent.

Thanks everyone. We haven't booked a room yet so I think we have decided to stay one night near the airport area. If anyone has specific recommendations for that night it would be appreciated. :) Thanks again

We have stayed at Agriturismo Ca Beatrice (http://www.agriturismocabeatrice.it/eng/) several times for early morning flights out of VCE. It would also be an excellent place to stay after a late arrival at VCE. It is located about five minutes from the airport and provides a shuttle service. Check with them about how late they do pick ups. It has beautiful, quiet rooms, a helpful staff, and delicious breakfast. In the morning, after a good night's rest, they can either take you to a nearby bus stop for the 20 minute ride to the vaporetto stops at Piazzale Roma or you can take a cab for about 40 euros.

I don't know where you want to stay in Venice or how much you want to spend, but maybe you can find a hotel that you can walk to from Piazzale Roma, that way you don't have to change hotels. For example, the Hotel Papadopoli is a gorgeous 4 star hotel that you can walk to from Piazzale Roma. It's on a canal about 300 yards from Piazzale Roma and the station. It is very conveniently located for transportation in and out of Venice and the vaporetto stop is only 200 yards away. But of course the historical center of Venice is quite small so you can also walk anywhere. It's surrounded by a beautiful park too. I know in winter it's very reasonable. Go to their website and see what they have to offer. If you go to Google Maps you can see where it is. Otherwise there are lots of cheaper places near the station around the Lista Di Spagna. It's not a long walk from Piazzale Roma either.
