We would like to visit the Vatican on the free afternoon of our final day of the tour. I visited the official Vatican site but there were no tickets available that day (June 11th). We were considering booking a tour online before we go, but then discovered it is possible to get a tour guide (with tickets I presume) right outside St. Peter's Basilica on the day we wish to tour. That would be more convenient, but is that advisable? If not, does anyone have recommendations to an online tour company?
They haven't released any tours for June 11th yet. It's not that they aren't available through the official site, they just haven't been released yet.

We just returned from Rome on 8 April and used Walks of Italy for all our tours (5), were highly satisfied, and will definitely use them for future travels. If you want to check them out: https://www.walksofitaly.com/vatican-tours/pristine-sistine-chapel-tour The Holy Door is open right now. Rome and most areas around Vatican City are pretty packed. We talked with a few people who were disappointed they didn't book ahead. Best wishes for your trip!
