Official Vatican tours appear to be booked up for the time we are in Rome. Can any one reccommend a reasonably priced good private tour guide?

When are you in Rome? Perhaps you tried booking too far in advance. Reasonably priced and private guide usually don't go hand in hand. You might consider the Vaticans audio guides if you can't book a tour. Donna

Check with your hotel. We reserved the day before we toured, in high season, no problem. As Rick says, you really need a tour to go there. We went very early in the morning, and the line was out the vatican and about a half a mile long (literally). We bypassed it all, and were inside on our tour quickly.
