Vatican tours

My husband and I wull be in Rome in July.It is going to be very hot and busy, so thought I should book a tour for the Vatican. Can anyone suggest a good tour company and should I book it before I go, or just book one when we are there?
Thanks

I would recommend Angel Tours. We did a couple tours with them in September and were extremely pleased. The groups are very small and the guides are fun and very knowledgeable. We did the morning tour of the Vatican (passed right by the huge long line) and then the Scavi Tour in the afternoon. Don't miss the Scavi Tour. You have to book through the Vatican and be sure to apply as far in advance as possible as the amount of tours are very limited each day. If I remember right, they only allow about 120 people each day to tour the underground. Have a great trip!

I would highly recommend Through Eternity. Great tour company - small limited groups. They make history come alive. We used this group for 3 tours while we were in Rome. You would not be sorry in booking with Through Eternity. The tour of the Vatican with them was AWESOME, as well as the Twilight Tour and the tour of the Colliseum and the Forum. We booked on line before we left NC. We would definitly use this group again. Have fun and enjoy.

Sharon, you should definitely book & make as many reservations in advance as possible. We used The Vatican Guided Tour & thought it was very thorough. It is much cheaper than a private tour. The guided tour lasts 2 hours & the rate includes the admission ticket. Email: [email protected] with date requested & type of language.

Purchase the Roma pass as it is very convenient & will save you a lot of money on transportation & museum admission costs.

We did the Vatican museum tour with Through Eternity last year and had a great time with the tour guide, Marle. We were a group ranging from 10 year old child to my parents...in their 80's. All had a good time. I would reccommend them again.

Sharon,

There is no better tour of St. Peter's than the free 90 minute tour that starts at the tourist post office off to the side of the main entrance to the basilica. It has been two years since we were there but the tour was conducted only two days a week at that time. Check Rick's Italy book for up to date info on it. The tours are led by Vatican volunteers. Mine was led by a darling little lady, Penny, who moved there from outside London over 30 years ago. We still talk about her. Rick should have a podcast self guided tour of the Vatican on the website. If so, it is bound to be as good as the one for the Louvre, better than anything you can buy

We used the free RS podcasts for the Vatican Museum, sistine chapel and St. Peter's. They worked great for us non-art majors. Plus we moved at our own pace. Yes, it will be hot. The Vatican museum was not air conditioned, so go early. I used a skip-the-line tour, but the lines weren't that bad. It was late June. By the afternoon, the lines were gone.
