Not a new topic but I promised I would post this after we came back. I had been worrying about the Vatican tours. We ended up just using the Rick Steve's guidebook tour. Got our vouchers ahead of time for 8:00 AM. Spent about 10 mins. in security line before it opened, then just walked through as per Rick's directions. One of our friends had the book. Used Rick's audio tour for the Sistine. Did the Pinoteca first, as suggested. Out the back door to St. Peter's and used Rick's tour in there. Awesome experience. Not sorry we did not get a tour- enjoyed it anyway and saw all we could absorb.
Just curious, Peggy...was the motive the high cost of the tours? Or mistrust of those offering the tours? I remember we were unhappy with the cost, but then, afterward, as time has passed, we have such fond memories of the older Roman gentleman who conducted our tour, and his sense of humor. Just wondering if one travels all that way and visits a site like this once, if more human interaction, ultimately, isn't worth the cost. I suppose it depends on the guide you get...and let's be honest, that's just luck. The same for the Coliseum and Forum, I think.
