We are travelling to Rome in September and would appreciate recommendations for tours of the Vatican.
Which tours would you recommend? Would you recommend the tour offered through the Vatican?
We used 3 Millennia in late June, and we were very pleased. Their group size is no larger than 10, and we ended up with just our family of 5.
Their website is not up to date, so, if you want accurate information, contact Tony Polzer (contact information on the site is current). He's very responsive.
For other suggestions, search this site, and you'll find a lot.
Just came back yesterday. Actually, we had booked an Angel Tours tour but the guide didn't show up (mix up on their part on the time). We had already downloaded the Rick Steves podcast for the Vatican and Sistine Chapel, so we just did it alone on our own and we were very pleased with the result. The lineup for the Vatican Museum was very short and we sailed right in, plugged into the iPod and let Rick do all of the work. Best of all - - - it was absolutely free. In hindsight, we decided that we didn't really need to pay for a tour after all. I wanted a tour to jump the long lineups - but the lineups didn't exist so we saved the money and instead spent it on great food and great wine.
I second the poster above - skip an organized tour and download one to your Ipod. There is sooo much to see that you don't want to be on somebody else's schedule. Personally, I love to just sit and look at the Sistine ceiling for ages! And some of the best art isn't even all that famous - your tourguide will skip right past it
I agree that Rick's audio tours are wonderful. We went with an organized tour, because we have 3 kids, and we felt that using the audio tours for that long a visit would be more difficult and that a guide would be more engaging. And, with 3 Millennia, our 2 younger kids (both 12) were free.
I'll 4th the recommendation to do the tour yourself. You set your own pace and there are many resources such the podcasts and guide books that will walk you through everything. Ricks Museum guide is very good as well.
