Having read just about everything in RS and RoninRome, Trip Advisor, Frommers, etc, any advice on which tour is a good one for the vatican/sistine/St. Peter's? I know there are many who feel solo with headphones is good, but this being my first trip to rome, I can't help but think a tour is the way to go. Also, we have a teenager to consider, so I'm not sure whether a three, or in one case, five hour tour will be too much. welcome any advice.

I think a three hour tour would be pushing it with a teen and a 5 hour tour would be torture for one. I would just book the two hour tour offered by the Vatican for the museums and sistine chapel. My daughter liked it and thought it was just long enough. For the basilica there are free tours you can take everyday at 2:30. Just go to the information desk to the left of the basilica. For the colosseum, the underground is a great tour to take. You can book tickets and the tour by calling or going online. 011 39 06 39967700 or http://www.ticketclic.it/Gb/HTML/musei/colosseo.cfm Halfway down the page use the "collect onsite" option to book the underground tour. You won't need to do a tour of the regular areas of the colosseum as the information is much the same and to do both tours would be redundant. The entry ticket is also good for the forum and palatine hill. Donna
Donna, Wow. a short message filled with useful information. This helps me immensely with competing my itinerary. My only other question is: I have read that the line to get into the basilica can be daunting, but that it moves fast. Do we just go to the basilica any day, any time, and get in line? Is there a more efficient way to do it? RinR also says monday and wednesday are not good days. Tuesday and Thursday are best. Has this been your experience as well? thanks,
julie
Ron is very smart on all things Rome and is spot on about the Vatican and it's best and worst days to visit. For the basilica, it's open to the public until 7pm. You just walk up and get in the security line. It does move very quickly, usually no more than 15 minutes even with a very long line. Just be sure you're both dressed properly. Pants for males and capris, pants or longer skirts for women. Both must have shoulders covered. Donna
