We will be arriving in Rome in late October and would like to take the tour of the Vatican. I have heard that the tour could be packed to the point of unenjoyable, and I have also heard that it is a can't-miss sort of event. Has anybody taken that tour in October? Is it less busy since this is considered "off season?" Thanks.
October is high season, not off season. It starts to slow down the first week of November.
As for the tour, which one are you talking about. The vatican offers several different tours and there are tons of tour companies that offer tours. I've taken several of the official tours and never found them "packed to the point of unenjoyable". The museums can, and do, get that way often, but the tours are just fine. You get a headset so you can hear the guide clearly and they give wonderful information.

We will not be using a tour company - just the official Vatican tour (I have not looked into details yet).
