My husband and I will be traveling with our three boys (4, 9, and 11) to Rome in July. I want to book an early morning (7:30 ish) Vatican tour. I have contacted some tour guides (from Rick Steves' book) but they are already booked. I also contacted an agency he mentions, but after three messages and no return call, I'm not sure. Does anyone have a tour guide/company to recommend? One that is "child" friendly? Thank you.

Check out Antiqua Tours. A friend of mine just used them for Coliseum & Forum and loved them. Three hour tour of the Vatican Museum & St Peters's for 150 euro + entry fees - that's very reasonable for a private tour. http://antiquatours.com/our-walking-tours-2/vatican-museums-and-st-peters/
If the previous recommendation doesn't work out, you may want to contact Context Rome. I know they offer family-type tours, and I have found them to be extremely responsive and forthright (but have not done a family-type tour). It would be worth talking to their office regarding your specific needs. (They have US, as well as European offices. You can find all their contact info by searching for Context Travel.)
Context Travels does a family-oriented tour of the Vatican. They have an outstanding reputation but it's 340E for three hours. http://www.contexttravel.com/city/rome/walking-tour-details/vatican-for-families
Thank you for your responses. I've booked with Walks of Italy. Their reviews seem good and their price fair. I will post when I return. Buon viaggio a tutti.
