Vatican tour timing?

We have 3 full days in Rome. We (finally!) heard back from the St. Peter's Excavation office and we're confirmed for the 1.5 hour tour at 11:15 on our second day there. How should we arrange our site seeing?

Does anyone know if we can get the Vatican Museum admission ticket for the morning, see some of the Vatican sites, do the tour at 11:15, then see some more Vatican sites after the tour, or is that admission ticket you can buy online only good for a few hours (or a one entrance with no re-entrance sorta thing)?

I'd like to do all the Vatican stuff in a single day so we have one day free for the ruins and another free for... whatever. I'm just not sure if that excavation tour in the middle of the second day will require us to do the Basilica/Museum another day and head over to the Vatican on a second day just for the tour?

Thanks!

You won't be able to exit for the scavi tour and then re-enter the museums without buying a second ticket. I would see the castel sant angelo and St. Peter's square in the morning before the scavi tour, do the scavi tour, have lunch then do the museums and basilica.

Assuming we start the self-guided Museum/Basilica tour around 13:30, does that give us enough time to see everything before they close (at 17:30, I believe)?

The museums close at 6 and the basilica closes at 7. You'll have plenty of time to see both after your scavi tour.

Awesome - I didn't realize they closed that late. Thanks Donna, I think we'll do just that!
