Need advice on the value and usefulness of hiring a local tour guide in Rome to see the Vatican, St. Peter’s Church and associated sights. Would appreciate suggestions on who to engage. Thanks
There are MANY suggestions in the Rick Steves Rome guidebook and you can do a search for it here on these forums in the search bar, as this topic is brought up often. We used Walks of Italy and were pleased, but I know there are LOTS of great ones mentioned often.
I just asked a similar question on the TripAdvisor Italy forum. One answer I got: "You can book small group tours or exclusive guides from the official Vatican website.

They also have regular group tours which might work for you. All tour groups wear the radio headsets so the guide can clearly be heard above the noise inside the museums. The Prime tours are limited to 25 people, the VIP Prime tours are limited to 10 people."
We almost never hire tour guides, but did in Rome. Walks of Italy. We were very glad we did, as they have info you would never get on your own, as well as making it smooth to enter the famous sites. Walks Of Italy shows the limit on their tours I believe. Ours was not a fancy one, but only had about a dozen people. Definitely worthwhile.
a couple years ago we did the Pristine Sistine tour of the Vatican. It was well worth the 95 Euro price at the time.
We used a local tour guide in Rome that we met on a Rick Steves tour. She was our local guide that led our group through the Vatican and was wonderful. We hired her privately last year when no RS tours were running and will be using her again this coming October for our group of 6 before our RS Southern Italy tour. She is engaging, funny, and extremely knowledgeable. We adore her and we love supporting her. Her name is Maria Laura Giorgi and she comes highly recommended by the famed Francesca Caruso.
