Does anyone know if biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do/action=booking is the legitimate website of the Vatican for booking tickets ? it's not in the Rick Steves Europe book we have and this web site asks for more personal information than most to buy tickets.
Hugh, it is the legitimate ticket office online of the Vatican museums. They ask more personal information because you will have to show valid id along with your voucher. I just booked my tickets 5 minutes ago and got my confirmation very quickly.
Mid July, walked up to the Vatican ticket window, bought tickets and got, all in about 3 min, no advance purchase.
Is there any disadvantage to using this site over one of the tour operators to get tickets? It looks slightly cheaper and so my instinct would be to use it. Just wondering if anyone has experience with waiting times, reliability, etc.
We used this site to book tickets for a tour a few months ago and it worked well. I think it took about 24 hours to verify. Went to Rome in May.....lines were horrendously long - very glad we had pre booked tickets and the tour. I believe this option just became available in the past 6 months or so...that's probably why it isn't in the RS Book.
We did the same as Ron. Wait until about noon, then go to the museum. We walked straight in, bought tickets and were on our way. This was on July 6. By the time we came out from the museum (where you see the Sistine Chapel), there were no lines to get into St. Peters. We had plenty of time to climb to the top of the dome and everything.
