Do you have to wait in the long security lines if you are just going on the Scavi Tour. We will not be bringing any large backpacks to check. Can I just get a taxi to drop us off in the front of the Square and enjoy time there before checking in at the Excavations Office?

There should be instructions with your ticket confirmation. Not sure what the procedure is now, but previously you went to the gate to the left of St. Peter's and waited there until your allotted time. The group was then led in to the excavations office just inside the gate and the tour started.
At that time, the tour ended by exiting into the crypt where the Popes are interred, from there you can go up to the main floor of the church.

Same when we went. No line because only those with reservations go to this entrance. Look for the Swiss Guard. When you enter, you go to the office, a few feet away and tiny, only one person from your group needs to check in. There you wait for the tour guide.
