Confused - help!! We will be in Rome on the My Way Tour 9/26- 9/28. The Vatican website shows that 9/27 is World Tourism Day and free admission. 9/28 is the last Sunday and is also free. Does this mean I can't book a tour? Sounds like it would be impossible to go on this weekend. Debating if I should hurry and grab 9/26 for a night tour but what happens if we arrive late and I can't make it??!!!
The 27th shows as not available for booking tours on the Vatican website (not sure about private tours) and even if they were available, I frankly wouldn't even think of trying to do the museums on a free day as skipping the ticket queue won't help with the enormous crowds inside.
You might contact the R.S. tour folks for an ETA on your arrival in Rome, and try to book the evening tour if they can confirm that you should have time to do that one?
Did a little bit of looking around, and it does appear that there are some tours which operate on W.T.D - like this one:
Specifically (under "Important info"):
"Note that entrance fees to the Vatican Museums are not included. A supplement of approx. 23 euros (adult) is payable in cash directly. Entrance will be free of charge on World Tourism Day (September 27). You’ll pay 6 euros (payable directly) for the advance booking fee to skip the line and use the headsets on September 27"
Again though, it will get you in faster but the crowds will be mighty thick. I'm not necessarily recommending this particular tour as I've never taken it; just using it as an example.
I booked a night tour on Friday 9/26. I too think it will be impossible to get in on 9/27 or 9/28.
