We will be in Rome as noted earlier Jul7 - 11. My research on the Vatican inc. RoninRome say that Thursday, Tuesday, and Friday probably in that order are best days to visit the Vatican. We are still unsure as to whether to pre-purchase or buy there?
Also - any feedback on how long we should allow?

Thanks to Roninrome, we saved the pre-purchase cost. We went last Thur, absolutely no line at 2:15pm. Too tired to climb the dome after the museum and also fell in love with Sistine so we went back the next day at 2:30pm, again no line. As to how long? do you like museum? Do you want to see the garden? Do you want to climb the dome? Do you want to lounge around the square? too many variables. Read the RS Mona Winks book.
We used Artviva.com and had a guide. They allow a maximum of 15 people per group and for 70€ each we got a 5 hour tour of the Vatican and St Peters Basilica. Our guide focused on the history, some will focus on the art, etc.
