Vatican Papal Audience on 24th Dec

Hi All,

has anyone had Papal Audience on Christmas Eve? if you have or perhaps know some information about it, could you please share?
1. Is this a midnight mass hosted by the Pope himself?
2. it is said as Liturgical Ceremony, what does it mean? Does the Pope just show up to offer the Communion or he would host the entire mass?
3. I would arrive on the 23rd which makes me a bit worried since we still need to exchange the confirmation letter from Vatican with actual ticket and based on information from this link https://www.vaticantour.com/papalaudience#information-tips, it is said that the Vatican will reply to your home address with a letter notifying you that they have received your request and where to take the letter at the Vatican to collect tickets.
They will not confirm tickets have been issued until you go to the prefecture office for collection.
There you will either receive your tickets or a letter to say there was not enough availability.

It also says that the tickets could be collected 4-5 days prior to the day.
Does this mean eventhough we have sent request months in advance for the Audience but arrive shortly/1 day prior to the Audience, it doesn't guarantee us getting tickets for Papal Audience?

I just wonder how the Holy See determine whether I could get the ticket or not. Is it based on the date when I fax (Vatican only accept request by fax or mail) the Papal Audience Request OR the date when I exchange the Vatican letter (confirmation that they've received my fax) with the ticket after I arrive at Vatican?

  1. How long before we need to enter the St Peter's Basilica for getting a good spot on Christmas Eve. Does the front seats could clearly see the Pope?

TIA

Some friends got into a Papal audience in February. It took 3 letters with cover letters from their parish priest and the bishop. But they did luck out get to actually shake hands with him as they were standing in the right place at the right time, with official photos. The story goes that the organizer didn't want to let go of his hand. His Holiness had to raise his eyebrows to say "Hey lady, I gotta move on!"

I think there must be a bit of politics as to getting front row seats. Kinda like asking how to get front row seats at a Paul McCartney concert.

According to the Vatican's website, there is no audience scheduled for December 24. There is midnight Mass scheduled. "Liturgical ceremony" means just that---the celebration of a liturgy---Mass, Vespers, Lauds, etc.

They will probably tell you when the Basilica will open for mass attendees. I would get there as close to opening time as possible. At an outdoor general office, we arrived almost 4 hours ahead of the starting time, and the plaza was already at least half full.

The statement about not knowing whether you'll get a ticket until you arrive probably reflects the fact that there are so many more requests than seats available.. There almost undoubtedly would be some prioritization depending on who/how tickets were requested. In the past, I worked through my pastor, who studied in Rome at the North American college.

See my response on your other post (submitted before I saw this one).

As Sam said, I think the chances of being at or near the front are pretty much zero.

Hi All,

Thank You kindly for all your very helpful response. i tried to email Vatican to get some info too but i understand there must be hundreds of emails and letters they received everyday. they did response my email but not really informative.

actually i just want to honour my mom wish that it'd be once in a lifetime experience for her to meet the Pope. so i try my best (unfortunately my mom won;t read this post ;p) *fingercross

sooo for the sake of getting into the Xmas Eve Papal Mass (they include this in Papal Audience category but I understand what you mean Sam that there wouldn't be shaking hands of course with the Pope at the end of the Mass) . I re-arrange my itinerary as follows:

23rd Dec go to Vatican first thing first to exchange my letter (if i could get one) w/ the Mass ticket. now this would be a miracle I should say if i could get a hand of 3 tickets just a day before the Mass
we'll spend the rest of the day in Vatican as thanks for the info here that St Peter's would be closed early in 24th)

24th Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill area and if we could get the ticket at 6pm we'd head to St Peter's Basilica

25th the Piazzas and fountains

Sam,
I was quite surprised that your friends need 3 letters to be granted Papal Audience. The information I got is quite the contrary. I only need to fax or mail directly to Vatican a very very simple request form. It only asks my name, which date i'd like the Papal Audience (link: http://www.vatican.va/various/prefettura/en/biglietti_en.html)
and if my mom could shake hands with Pope as your friends were.... I dare not think what's going to happen afterwards lolz

and this is the biggest worry after the Mass, how could we get back to the hotel?? I believe the public transportation couldn't accommodate thousands of ppl. If I plan to get accommodation around Pantheon area? Is it safe to walk back on Xmas Eve?

Jen,
The Christmas Eve "midnight mass" is more like a 10:00 PM mass. If successful, you will get tickets and should get in line at the end of Via di Porta Angelica as early as possible. I think they actually open the church about 90 minutes before the Mass, so 7:00 PM would not be too early if you want to be near the front of the line and get a seat on the aisle with a chance to see the Pope in processional and recessional. We have gone to Papal Mass twice on New Year's Eve and arrived about 90 minutes in advance of the church opening and we scored seats. So you end up waiting about 3 hours both inside and outside for the privilege of attending a Papal Mass.

As to how to return to your hotel, it is perfectly safe to walk, indeed as long as it is not raining it can be quite delightful! Some people disperse rather quickly, and others hang out in the piazza enjoying the tree and creche, so you might find getting a taxi not so bad. The buses (#64 and #40) will be a nightmare. I would walk before I took one in that crowd. Have your options in mind when you exit. If there's a taxi in the stand outside the square, grab it. Otherwise, start to walk.

Hi Laurel,

i was just writing a post to you in my Rome first timer thread :D

Thanks so much for the info. i plan to head to St Peter's around 6pm from the Colosseum area, if i could go quicker i would. also, do you need to get the tickets on hand for entering the basilica or just queue as early as possible?

the transport info is very helpful Dear. I worried a lot about it but then I could focus on how to enter the Basilica firsthand. may i know where you stay previously? i plan to book hotel around Pantheon area in case we couldn't get a taxi and need to walk back to the hotel or is there another better recommendation?

TIA

You must have your tickets. Once they open security, you go thru the scanners (like at an airport, and do not bring a large bag/backp[ack. Purse only). Then you will go to a line (people will be running across the piazza, especially the nuns, but take it easy and do not get hurt!) and then you will show your ticket to a guard who will let you in. Make your way down the first row you see open with seats close to the aisle. Do not hesitate! And do not let the nuns crowd your space. They are ruthless.

We were unable to get tickets to the Papal Midnight Mass. We ended up doing Midnight Mass at the Pantheon; I got asked to do a reading! It was smaller and more intimate, and absolutely beautiful!! We went to St Peter's Square on Christmas Day for the noon blessing. We had been to Rome about 5 times, and it was the only time we had seen the Pope (from a distance in the square, plus on the big TVs).

Hi TravelJess

Did you get the confirmation request letter before exchanging it with the entrance ticket? or you were about to exchange it but the Mass tix ran out already?

The unexpected letter has arrived. woww after 3 weeks. it advises that spots have been reserved under my name and the entrance ticket could be picked up 2-3days before. it also says that it doesn't guarantee i could get in which i assume if i come late for the queue.

so now..i have no idea still how to get back after the Mass. the only option is by taxi which i don't know how many they would be since it's Christmas Eve and there are thousands who want to go back too. and i need to race with the Nuns for seating spots >_<

I don't know where you settled on for lodging, but I would plan to walk after the service, at least to get across the river if you are staying in the central part of the city. You might find a cab more easily once you cross the Tevere.

BTW, I think I read the Mass is at 21:30 this year. Does your letter say?

Hi Laurel,

my lodging is in between Repubblica & Termini subway. it'd take an hour roughly without getting lost.

there is no detail in regards to the starting hour of the Mass. it just recommends to start coming 2 hours before the Mass. and i also have no idea when the Mass is going to finish. initially i think it could be more than 12am midnight. do you have any info about the finish time of the Mass?

thanks for the 9.30pm info Dear. I plan to leave my hotel around 5.30pm the latest taking the subway to Ottaviano. or is this still too late especially if the Mass starts earlier?

Good idea, i'll walk to around Piazza Navona perhaps we'd get more chance in getting the cab. hopefully even before navona we could catch a cab. btw what's the normal cab rate from across Tevere to Repubbica perhaps you might know? is there any holiday or after midnight surcharge?

Cheers

Mass is scheduled to start at 20:30 GMT and end at 23:30 GMT (might run longer depending on how much the Pope talks). Right now in Rome that equals 21:30 start and 00:30 end.

Hi All,

sorry it's late already but i feel i need to share still the miracle happened during our Papal Mass itinerary. but first of all, i'd like to Thank You for everyone guiding me in this forum ! without your guidance, i'd get lost even by the definition of what a Papal Mass is..

as you might know from this forum, the difficulty of us getting the access to the Mass and uncertainty of being able to get into the Basilica even after getting the access had making us quite anxious. We managed to retrieve entrance tickets smoothly a day before. we saw people got rejected and looked desperate wanted to get into the Mass by any chance. some of them even tried to made calls perhaps to their Pastoral so they could contact someone that could grant them permission. i could see desires in these ppl despite of the terror attack, they're not deterred to attend the Mass for their beliefs and i felt really privileged of being able to get the entrance tickets

Unfortunately, on the day, my hubby's knee was injured so he had to take a rest in the hotel and i felt unsafe if there'd be only me and mum alone getting back from the Mass at midnight. Sadly i decided we need to cancel the Mass though i knew my mum would feel disappointed but our safety still had to come first.

Miraculously we met my cousin who was in honeymoon on our way back to hotel just after our visit to St Maria Maggiore Basilica. My cousin had tried to apply for the Mass but unsuccessful and we happened to have 1 extra ticket due to my hubby not able to join in. There was no plan at all for us to meet in this circumstances and we happened to stay in the same hotel! if you don't call this destiny , i don't know what else then. my cousin's husband is 6feet tall and perfect for being our bodyguard :D unfortunately, he couldn't get inside because we only had 3 tickets so being a gentlemen he is, he waited outside freezing for hours. By the time we met, it was 6pm already. i felt very slim chance we could attend the Mass but still didn't want to disappoint my mum further as i could still see her wish to attend the Mass. after all it's one of our main purpose coming there.

we arrived there around 8pm and we could still even get the seats indoor! though it's hard to see the Pope as when he came in everyone raised their cameras up and above and some even stood on their chairs :D. so we finally able to enjoy the Mass though not staying until the end due to our worry not getting the public transport back to hotel. we saw from news the next day that our country's singer, Anggun whom is one of Pope's favourite sang for the night, we wished we stayed a bit later to hear her performed.

getting back was not 'that' easy. we were able to get taxi because we got out firsthand and there were not many Mass visitors this year. otherwise i don't think we could get taxi within 15mnts. the fare was also tremendous, the taxi driver charged us EUR30 for a normal EUR 15max fare! we had to walk a bit further from st peter's, passing a taxi stand where around 5 ppl before us had queued with no taxi insight. it was also a luck we could get the taxi as the ppl before us objected with the fare charge. well the taxi driver said the fare only charged for that night and he drove like an F1 driver would across the bumpy roads of Rome :D

overall it's a pleasant experience and hopefully it could be a useful information for ppl wanting to join the Papal Mass. somehow i also felt the lacking of visitors this year did contribute to a more enjoyable events and i would not be able to get into the Mass that late during previous years. this is also 1 thing in my life that proved faith could bring miracle as my mum's strong faith proven to against all odds. what's yours is yours and if it's meant to happen , it'd happen eventually

Thanks for the nice report, Jen! Wow, that's quite a story about running into your cousin!

Very glad all worked out so well for you. As I think we chatted about in another of your reports, the lack of expected visitors this past holiday season - what with it being a Jubliee Year - was a bit of a surprise to the Vatican and local authorities whom had expected many more but it was definitely in your favor!
