vatican on your own?

Several years ago we took a tour of the vatican museum. When we return we'd like to wander on our own, at our own pace. Is that allowed or can you gain entry only with a tour?

Most visitors at the museum will be there on their own. There are parts of the museum where the guards/docents keep you from must hanging around, but you can pretty much take it at your own pace. Consider buying a good guide book, since that museum in particular is packed with so much stuff. Happy travels.

We did the Vatican on a tour, we were only in a group of 6 counting the 3 of us and the tour guide. She was very knowledgable about the Vatican. The downside was that I felt rushed. Next time I go, I am doing it on my own.

My husband and I wanted to tour the Vatican at our own pace. Just wondering if the admission tickets include the head phones? Or do we have to get the guided tour tickets to avail one?

Annie, if by "headphones" you mean the Vatican's own audioguide, you have to pay 7E extra. Vatican guide info I don't have any personal experience with those, as we used the RS written self-guided tour from his Rome book. Perhaps someone else can weigh in with their experience.

We went on our own. We made reservations online ahead of time and used the Rick Steves Audio tour there. We got a little lost at the beginning, but we didn't realize there were maps in iBooks under PDFs (would have been helpful!)
