Vatican on Thursday with guide vs Wednesday with audiotour

Hi
We're going to Rome for the second time (last in '08) later this month. We're a family of four, 2 boys ages 16 and 11. In '08 we toured St Peter's (which we loved) but skipped the Vatican. This time we would like to tour the Vatican and have hired a private tour with a guide recommended by Francesca Caruso (she was booked the week we're there) for a Thursday at 9:00 am. Since booking her, I've read that the only time it's not packed to the gills is Wednesdays, due to people choosing an audience with the Pope over visiting the museum at that time. Of course now she has no availability on Wednesday and neither does any other guide I've contacted.
Question: what would end up being a more enriching, pleasant experience: our private tour with our guide and the rest of humanity, or a less crowded, self-guided tour using Rick's audiotour?
Your advice is appreciated.

I would go with the guide! I think the Vatican might be less crowded but still very crowded. The guide will know how to work with the crowds and I think will add a lot\
Enjoy!

I agree, I would go with the private guide. I am guessing she can also tailor your tour to interest your boys as well.

No matter when you go or if you go with a guide or not you won't find a less crowded time at the Vatican museums during high season. They are crowded from the time they open until the time they start ushering people out. With or without a guide you'll be touring the museums with thousands of other people. Choose the option that works the best for your schedule.
