Vatican on Sunday, the last day of May.

We have three days in Rome and I would like to follow RS
three day itinerary but am concerned that the day he recommends the Vatican is the last Sunday of the month which is free as I understand it. Should we visit the Vatican on Saturday and Ancient Rome on Sunday?

Yes. Free day at the Vatican is too busy. Ever been to your local zoo when it's free? You get the idea! Are you planning to take a Vatican tour or go on your own? I think a tour, especially a small group tour, makes the most use of your time on a first visit. Actually the same is true of Ancient Rome. If you can afford a guide, do it.

I wouldn't go to the vatican museums on free Sunday if you paid me. It's so crowded that you can't move. You are pushed along with the crowd and can't stop to spend any time looking at any of the exhibits. I would go on Saturday. Donna

I certainly wouldn't do it on a free day. In addition, we found out the hard way not to leave a visit to Saint Peters Basilica for the last day of our stay. Under this current pope, the Basilica can be closed to the public for several hours for private reasons. My friend Ann missed out because a special event had been scheduled, which was not a religious holiday.

I asked on aonther thread: I've been to Vatican many years ago. It was great. This time I'm going with my parents. They just want to see the Sistine Chapel and don't mind the crowds. We will go last Sun of Aug for free. The last entry is 12:30. If we got there 11:30-12, can we get in?
