Vatican on Easter Sunday

My family of 4 would really like to witness the spectacle of Easter Sunday mass at the Vatican this year, especially with Pope Francis. We would prefer to not be IN the throngs, just VIEW the throngs. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good vantage point?

That's a tough one. I think Television may be your only option. You need tickets (verified and requested by your local Parish) to get in. St. Peters/Vatican are surrounded by an ancient wall. On Good Friday they carry the cross from the Colloseum to St. Peters through the streets. Check with your hotel for exactly you can view that. I always stay at Hotel Alimandi Vaticano which is across the street, and they have a roof top terrace, but I'm not sure what you can see from up there.

I don't want to get tickets for the mass: I want to view the crowds, not be in the crowds.
