Any advice on how to deal well with the Vatican on a sunday. It's the only day we can go. No breakfast with the Pope on sunday. Any tips???? You all have really helped this Grandma touring with three teenage boys. Thanks
The Vatican Museums are only open the last Sunday of each month and they are even more crowded than usual that day. St. Peter’s Basilica is open daily and easy enough to tour on your own, free. Rick Steves has an excellent audio tour as well a written version in his guidebook.
The Free Sunday is the last Sunday of the month.

As Laurel had posted, free Sundays are the last ones of every month but as she wisely advised, they're mobbed so it's not a good day at ALL to try and visit them, and especially not during high season. Best to find other fun things to do in Rome than to waste hours in a very long, hot queue and be overrun (and it's busy enough on regular days!) if/when they finally do make it inside.
