Vatican Night Tour

We are considering a Vatican Night Tour with a tour company. Just wondering if anyone has taken these and can compare it to a day tour. Thanks!

I assume you mean the Vatican Museums? If so, you'll find that not all galleries are open at night, which is why I didn't do it. For example, when I looked, the Pinocoteca (painting galleries) were closed in the evening, and I certainly wanted to visit them. If your main interest is seeing the Sistine Chapel, then it might make sense (assuming you're not going in the next few weeks). The tour agency (or maybe even the Vatican website, vatican.va; select museums option) can provide the specifics on which galleries are open.

Terri,
We found that during the day (early morning) when touring the Vatican Museums on a Rick Steves' Heart of Italy trip, it was EXTREMELY crowded......we thoroughly enjoyed it, but it was packed. Think of people moving almost shoulder to shoulder through the large halls and then standing in a completely full room in the Sistine Chapel with guards yelling at everyone to be silent every few minutes, then the crowds getting loud a few minutes later, repeat, repeat, repeat. That's what days are like during prime tourist season. Then, a second time we experienced the Vatican Museum and the Chapel on a private tour with a Tauck Tour (week-long group tour). Oh my gosh...what a difference. We took photos of the virtually empty halls, and it was a completely different experience in the Sistine Chapel. My sister, then subsequently traveled with Tauck, and they only had 15 on their group tour and they literally were in the Chapel with a total of no more than 15 people.....very special. What I don't know, and others on this Helpline may be able to tell you, is what it is like on the general non-private Vatican Night Tours. But, I can tell you without a doubt that it has to be MUCH BETTER than the crowds during the day. If you want to see every single room, then maybe do a day tour, but I'd be tempted to tell you to then ALSO take the Night Tour, so you can experience the beauty without the masses of humanity. Either way, though.......crowds or no crowds, the Vatican Museums, the Chapel and the Basilica are definite must-sees and they can be enjoyed (just differently) each way. Safe travels.
