Has anyone ever done the Vatican Necropolis? I am visiting Rome next June next year with two other travelers and we just got tickets for it. I am not claustrophobic, but I was wondering how the tour experience was since I've heard it can be dark and very close quarters.
We did with the kids last December. It was dark and a bit tight but I didn't find it claustrophobic.
There are pathways. I don't remember the ceilings being particularly low. We were with a group of about 15 people.

I did this tour a few years ago and it was fascinating. The passages are narrow but the ceiling isn't particularly low.
I have done the scavi tour twice, one last year and the first about 8 years ago. The tour is great and while the ceilings are low, it is not particularly close. Go through the official vatican site to get the tickets and you absolutely must be at the gate (to the left of the Basilica) 15 minutes before your tour. Remember, you also must go through security (bag check and metal detectors) first, so get there early. You can always visit the church prior to the Scavi.
I suffer from mild claustrophobia and the Scavi tour didn't bother me a bit. Also, not dark. However, be advised that it is VERY warm and humid. Like a greenhouse for orchids. That was the big surprise.
Highly recommend it but we did it in October and it was still rather hot below. One of our party became quite nervous when we stayed too long in one spot while the guide talked rather long, but it is not scary-- there are plenty of groups down there which you will see moving thru the corridors from time to time.
