Has anyone out there visited the Vatican necropolis? Was it a worthwhile experience. How far in advance do you have to request tickets?

A number of people posting here have done this tour, it's called the Scavi tour or the Vatican Scavi tour, or the Vatican necropolis tour. This site gives the details on how to reserve it: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/institutions_connected/uffscavi/documents/rc_ic_uffscavi_doc_gen-information_20040112_en.html This site gives additional info: http://www.saintpetersbasilica.org/Necropolis/ScaviTour.htm If you would like to browse previous posts on the Vatican Scavi tour, follow the search instructions given here: http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/39868/bget-answers-to-your-questions--searching-ricks-archivesb.html

My husband and I did the trip earlier this month. We loved it! We did a tour of the Vatican and Basilica before the necropolis, which really gave us some perspective. I booked the tour in April for September.
Definitely recommended :)

We LOVED the Scavi tour! It was my husband's favorite thing in all of Rome and something we'll never forget. We booked in December for an April tour. Give them all of the dates you're available, since the number of visitors each day is very limited. Good luck!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That being said...we did the Scavi Tour last month and we thought it was just ok. It was hot and HUMID and the tour was guide was a strange person. We did not walk away blown away with any everlasting sensation or emotion. Go and make your own decision afterward. Buon viaggio,
