Has anyone done the Friday night tours of the Vatican Museums that begin at 7 pm? We will be there in June and I thought it might be a good way to beat some of the crowds and the day time heat. I am concerned about the lighting being too poor to be able to appreciate the ceilings, etc. Also, is it safer to travel via metro or bus as it will be around 10:30 pm to head back to our hotel near the Termini Station. Thank you and I hope to get some responses ASAP to make that reservation!
The Friday night tour time is excellent. I went last year and could not believe the difference. I have visited the museum several times at a variety of times - early AM, lunch time, mid afternoon - and there is no better time than Friday evening. I saw works of art I had completely missed on previous visits because of the crowds. I was there in late October and did not find that the light was a problem at all.
Only one drawback - the Pinoteca is usually not open - a real pity since it is one of the best galleries and contains the original paintings that are represented by the mosaics in St,. Peter's - however given the volume of other art work to see - including the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel I would highly recommend the Friday evening tour.
I can't speak to safety as I usually stay in the Prati district - though I have never felt unsafe on the streets of Rome at night.
Friday nights are a great time to visit the museums.
A couple things to keep in mind. Not all of the galleries are open on Friday nights. Be sure to read the list so you know if the galleries you're most interested in will be open. The basilica closes at 7pm so you'll need to see that prior to visiting the museums or see it the next day.
You should be fine taking the metro or a bus back to your hotel. Just be aware of pick pockets and you'll be fine.
