do i need to buy tickets for the vatican museum online before getting to Rome to avoid long lines? when i saw the colleseum a couple of years ago there were vendors selling tickets nearby so i could avoid the long lines, do they have the same thing for the vatican?

Depending on when you are visiting, time of the year, day of the week, and time of day... you may or may not need "skip-theline" tickets. I have been in the museums probably 100+ times in the past three years and only pre-bought tickets 4-5 times. I've never waited in line for more than 5-10 minutes to get in. It's all about timing... and time of day. I usually go to the Museums in the afternoon. There will be many people outside the Vatican Museums, the metro stations, etc. trying to sell you "skip the line" access, but you have to pay the entrance fee AND for their tour - not the same as buying the tickets online from the Vatican. Tracy, I checked the vatican website. The entrance tickets are still available for September. I didn't check the tour tickets as you don't mention doing a tour. You can prepurchase entry tickets at: http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do?weblang=en&do Or as Ron says, you can just go in the afternoon. The line is usually shorter in the afternoon as most of the tour companies go in the morning. Donna

I am actually going next week, I bought my tickets well in advance then two days ago changed my mind and wanted to do the guided tour. I contacted the Vatican via email told them I would like to upgrade to a tour and I was all set in 2 hours. They emailed me new vouchers and I am good to go. I think if you know you are going and know when you are going just get everything done in advance.
