For general-entry tickets, about 60 days in advance.
They've been selling out very quickly when they become available. This post from the end ofg January might be helpful if you can't manage to get your hands on those lowest-priced tickets.

Thank you. I guess I will have to wait another month to get the tickets. I just delayed my departure from Rome by one day specifically to be there on a day the Vatican Museum was open at night.
Last October we were not able to purchase tickets as they sold out while we were in the online queue. We took the next option which was the Guided Tours for Individuals - Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. We booked through the official Vatican museum website (app). I highly recommend this tour. We moved through the museum at a nice pace and at the end were free to walk back to areas we wanted to spend more time. This was October 2022 and the museum was packed. The tour is well worth the difference between the regular ticket price and the Official Vatican Guided Tour.
I purchased tickets for a Friday evening visit - May 12th - to do this I went online at March 12th at 8pm DST - MIDNIGHT Rome time -
within in 1 hour the day and evening tickets were sold out - so get online immediately!
Rome does not go on DST until March 26th.
jj, Thank you for that information. It looks like I will have to be on line the evening of Apr 15 in order to get a night ticket to the museum for June 16.
I wanted to book the $17 museum tickets for May 8 and they are also sold out. Instead I ended up purchasing the Prime Experience guided tour. Total was $136.00 for two tickets.
@vborkow
You won't regret booking this tour. I feel it was one of my best decisions in my trip to Rome!
I missed the Prime Experience tickets for June 9th. How is the "Admissions and American Breakfast" tickets for getting in early enough to see the Sistine chapel? I'm not sure if these are "skip the line" tickets. Does anyone know?
There’s no skip the line
The line is for those who are purchasing tickets on sight day of
Nobody skips the security line
I got my ticket today (60 days Italian time from when I will be there) for an evening entry to the Vatican Museum. Thank you to everyone who responded and provided the needed information.
It took some persistence. I tried to get on at mid-night Rome time, but the Vatican Museum web site was overloaded. After about 10 minutes of hitting the refresh button I was able to get through. So do not give up.
Just for info, I logged back on an hour later. At that time there were some day time tickets still available but no tickets were available for the evening hours which is what I wanted.
I used this website for my Vatican tickets:

I also booked a private 3 hour tour for my family with a Rick Steves recommended guide.

I recommend that you go with a guide.
I have been to the Vatican Museum previously with a guide. It was an early morning entry and I still found the crowds to be excessive. This time I am going during the evening hours just to take my own time and enjoy the museum.
