Vatican Museum free Sundays

Hello,
I understand that the Vatican Museum is free on the last Sunday of every month. I've read that it is so crowded that it is better to buy a ticket and go a different day. However, we will be in Rome on the last Sunday of September and wondered if anyone had gone on that Sunday and if the crowds were still huge even that late in the season? We would, of course, plan to arrive early. Thanks for your help, Teri

September and October are high season in Rome. The Vatican museums will be wall to wall people. I would not even think about doing a free Sunday, especially during high season. Even getting there early means you either start lining up at 6 am or you wait for hours in line. I would suggest buying tickets for another day. Believe me, the frustration will not be worth the money you save. Donna

To tag on to Teri's post - We were wanting to see the Pope at noon on Sunday and thus were planning to do the Vatican Museum while we were there so we wouldn't have to return to the neighborhood - but based on this, sounds like it might be worth coming back to the area with reservations so we don't spend hours in line. Has anyone gone to see the Pope - any suggestions on when to arrive and if it's worth the visit?
Thanks!
