Vatican Museum at Night

For those who have previously heard Donna in Cranberry Township mention the Vatican Museum at night as an option I'd just like to highlight the suggestion. My mother and I were just there this past Friday night (they will have more Friday nights until the end of October) and its not to be missed. While there were huge crowds outside prior to the opening of the doors - do get there pretty early and do get in the correct line! - the crowds faded away once we were past the ticket turnstile. I kid you not when I say there were less than 50 people in the Sistine Chapel when we were there. It was almost like a private tour. Entire gallery halls were empty except for ourselves and the guard and sometimes not even a guard! With so few folks in the Chapel there was no sneaking of pictures but nor was there the mass of the crowd, the guards with their loud "shhhhh!!!" or "no photo! no photo!". Worth every penny. Thanks Donna!

I'm so glad you had a good time. It is such a different atmosphere than during the day.

I wish it were open in Winter! I'm going in January and would love to go at night. Did it once, but got there a little later thanI should have, and they didn't have the lighting installed yet. Thanks for the update. Regards, the "other Donna."

Oh yes! "Other Donna" - the lighting was on and at first a bit annoying because at the wrong angle it sort of makes it tricky to see but since its so roomy and wonderfully empty you can move to see what you want to see! They are clearly doing some work as there were 2 scaffolds up in the Chapel, not to mention along the route to get to the Chapel, where we encountered a good amount of draped off areas for working. I imagine Rome in the winter would be not too bad so I can't imagine why they wouldn't have Friday evening hours as it sure did seem popular. You are both such wonderful resources for the message board - thank you!
